If you look carefully at the text on the left, you can see the serif font has fine hook-lines on each letter. Serif fonts tend to be traditional looking. Sans-serif fonts do not have the hook-lines so have a sharper finish and modern look. ‘Sans’ is French for ‘without’ so these fonts are without-the-hook-line squiggly bits. Not the best terminology but you get the idea.
